Govind Ballabh Pant Engineering College (or GBPEC) is an autonomous institution for higher technical education run by the state government of Uttarakhand, India. It was created in 1989 to honour the Indian freedom fighter Padma Shri.[1] Govind Ballabh Pant.
The college is located in the Garhwal Himalayas, at a height of 1800 m (7000 ft.) above sea level, spread over 169 acres (0.68 km2). The college has a quiet, congenial, hilly and pollution-free environment. Summer is pleasant with a maximum of 30 °C for a few weeks (around two months in a year), and for rest of the time (around ten months in the year) the weather remains cool.
Gobind Ballabh Pant Engineering College, Pauri Garhwal was established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1989. It started its first academic session in 1991. The college is affiliated to Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun (Uttarakhand).[2] It is located about 11 km from Pauri, the District headquarters and is about 33 km from Dev Prayag, a historical and pilgrimage place.
The college is financed by the Government of Uttarakhand and managed by the Board of Governors with the Minister of Technical Education, Government of Uttarakhand, as the Chairman. The Chairman is the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, since he holds the Technical Education portfolio.
The institution offers courses in MCA, M. Tech, and B. Tech. As of 2009-10, the college provides six undergraduate and three graduate courses.
The Engineering departments offer undergraduate B. Tech. degrees in [3]:
The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department offers postgraduate M.Tech program in Digital Signal Processing.
The Biotechnology Department offers postgraduate M.Tech Program in Biotechnology.
Admission for undergraduate programs is made through All India Engineering Entrance Examinations (AIEEE) which conducts an entrance exam at all India Level. 85% of seats are reserved for candidates who are domiciles of Uttarakhand. Admissions for the graduate programs are done at the college level from GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) qualified candidates, and remaining seats, if any, on merit basis.
The college is fully residential and requires that all students live in a hostel. There are eight hostels for boys and girls. There is one Teachers' Transit Hostel (TTH).
There are 3 hostels for women:
There are five hostels for men:
Three more hostels (160, 300 and 350 places) are under construction, for completion by March 2011. After completion of these hostels, the capacity of the hostels would increase to accommodate up to 1875 students.
The Applied Science department is concerned with the first year students. It includes study of subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Management, Economics and English. Its labs are:
The CSE department teaches the CSE and MCA students. It has hardware and software labs, with internet connection (10 Mbps)through BSNL. The department labs are:

The department has faculty members like Dr. Yashvir Singh, Dean Academic and Dr. Anil Kumar Gautam, officer in charge of time table, communication and security.
The Department workshop is a centralised facility, which works with the other labs related to mechanical engineering. The labs in the central workshop are:
The other Mechanical and Production Engineering Department labs include:
The department was established in 2005. It has the following labs:
Construction work on the Biotechnology Department was stopped in February 2009, even though its plan was approved by the State Government of Uttarakhand. The department operates from the Science Block of the college.
The library contains 5000 titles and 30000 volumes, which includes almost all the books covered by the syllabus, and other technical journals like IEEE publications and other magazines, varying from computers to applied sciences and humanities.
The construction of a separate Central Library building was stopped in February 2009 even though it was completed 45% and approved by the State Government of Uttarakhand, because of the precarious financial condition of the State Government of Uttarakhand. So the Central Library continues to run from the old Computer Science and Engineering Block.
The Central Library facilities include book scanner and learning resources CDs, VCDs and DVDs in its Digital Library section. Students and staff members have access to books, journals and technical magazines. The library buys 60 national and international journals, and subscribes to 245 online journals.
Library users are licensed to use the DELNET database for study, project work, and research purposes. Digital Library Section is fully functional.
The Training and Placement Cell in the college is headed by Mrs. Priti Dimri. Students have been employed in Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra, NIIT, Bajaj Auto, HCL Technologies, Satyam Computers and Syntel. It is hoped to establish a separate Training and Placement Cell at Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand (at five hours distance from the college), since the companies and industries sometimes hesitate to visit the college, which is in a geographically difficult location.
